If fbw is their staple diet or a dominant food, the internal infection could come from the poorly treated fbw (i.e weak UV treatment) .. one area to look into IMO.

commercial FBW usually went through the UV process (I hope!).. those that sold alive from LFS (rare, hard to find already) and from unknown source will be much more dodgy..

I thawed the frozen cubes and make sure all worms sunken before pouring them into the tank. The water will get cloudy very little during the process but I don't think it is red in color..

the issue with this type of sponge filter is if the AC stops, hence the pump stops, it will release the debris back into the tank.. even if you lift it up to clean it it...
