Default DIY LED lighting

Just beginning this exciting reefer journey. I had tried to find a neat led lighting to match my 3ft x 2ft x2 ft tank. After many unfruitful efforts, I decided to design and fab a LED to meet my needs. And the result as follows:

I still yet to find the correct lum for this setup. Possible to provide me any good ideas or information? Appreciate all your comments.

DIY stuffs may need extra time & effort, but it is definitely more suitable for your own use.

Thumb upz

im sorry to break this to you, but i must tell you that 5050 LED are definitely not able to keep ANY corals in your tank. espcially at 2ft height. i see some SPS in your tank and they will be the first to suffer.

5050smd MIGHT work if your tank is less than 20cm tall, and yes, might only.. simply because it dosn't come with a correct spectrum nor does it comes with good PAR/PUR levels.

a basic lighting (in ur case, a 2ft deep tank) should requires AT LEAST 3w LEDs. even so, you would require good led brand (cree) or good led color and fixture to provide good lighting for your sps.

you can get a Beamswork 3w/LED model to 'tahan' while you source for a good led. here's some recommandation depending on your budget.

1) Reefbreeders 36"
2) maxspect razor 160w 16k
3) AI Hydra 52
4) orphek atlantik v2
5) Kessil A360w x2

1 being the cheapest and 5 being the most ex(i believe so). once again i stress that you do more research regarding the led you used and change to a proper 3w/led light set.

Next you would need to look into color, some prefer warmwhite + cool white, while some prefer cool white + red/green etc etc. No matter what you choose, violets are a must (410- 430nm). controllability comes next, cheaper ones give u just an on/off switch, while some (all of the above stated) give you at least some form of control (sunrise/sunset). Some will provide fancy effects (storm, cloudy etc etc) though they are not needed.

oh and is there only 1 small wavemakers in your tank? for sps, they require strong flow. consider getting a jebao wp25 or best, 2 wp25 or 2 wp10 to cater to the sps needs.

Default DIY LED lighting

Hi All

Has anyone ever built there own LED unit and can share any good websites that might help me understand the requirements?
Is it a highly complex job or something a good DIY person can do?
Any feed back would be great.

Thanks
