Default Species profile - Brachyplatystoma flavicans

Scientific name: Brachyplatystoma flavicans

Common name: Dourada Catfish

Family: Pimelodidae

Origin: Brazil,Peru

Maximum size: 180cm

Temperature :
22 to 27c

Water PH
6.0 to 7.2

Description:
Brachyplatystoma flavicans is a beautiful silver fish. They are fairly active and on the move most of time.

tank size recommendations * : the bigger the better

some suggested tankmates * : fishes that seldom move, so it wont feel threatened and dash to knock its head into the tank.

Feeding:
They have similar feeding habits like most of the catfishes.

Breeding: not known

Personal notes *:
This fish is frustrating to keep. at least for me. you would expect a catfish to be more sedate and calm. But no. this guy just dashes around knocking itself into the tank walls. take a look at mid sized flavicans u see, almost all have the tell-tale " naked-flesh lips" , either from constant abrasion due to it repeatedly rubbing its mouth against the tank walls, or dashing and knockind head - on. a good specimen of a flavicans is one that has nice black lips, like black lipstick. NOTE that this catfish is one of the few catfishes which is a fussy eater, so if u see one with a good appetite, grab.
