Tim, you mentioned your RTG is around 4 years old, if the lower jaw as shown in the your picture puffs up like a big ballon and the aro occassionally swims very fast in circles - I suspect your aro is coming of age.

This could be a male aro and fasting sometimes happens as they do not eat during brooding period. Some members here who have experience breeding may be able to give you better idea.
