u ask me go u better standby ard $200.

i go means sera siphorex, eheim substrate pro n biohome+ liao. nth else. maybe can replace one of them with rena bio chem star. all those $30+ to $40+. effect guaranteed.

if u maintain the medias well shld b able to last u a few yrs. some of my medias used since the day i setup my tank.

its more of the material used n how they make the media. not really about $. but those ex medias r mainly using sintered glass n made into porous form of diff shapes which allow BBs to cling on to in the medias. cheap medias if made the same way also can work well. just that i rather spend more on reliable brands.
