Hey, haven't seen you in a long while. Look forward to the day when you return to this hobby dude. Oh yes, I got some turq (own spawn) which I hope to show and get your expert comments soon. |

Dear Checkerbox,
I usually really like the fish you show us but was a bit dissapointed by this fish. I studied this fish a long time and decided to give you my honest opinion on this fish. First of all I do like the color of this fish, it is nice and clean and good distributed in both finnage and body. But the bodyshape of this fish is not as it should be in my opinion. The mouth to dorsal topline shows several bumps/dips and should be smoother and the body in general is too short. The short ventrals and extreme branching in the caudal to me point at extreme rosetail influence. To be honest I personally cull such fish and never use them in my breedings as I think our goal as betta breeders should be breeding vital, healthy and balanced fish. I hope you can appreciate my honesty in this..... Many greetings from the Netherlands, Joep |

first i need to said SORRY, if my english is poor i might able answer about this fish for you as now IRWIN is in BKK , so i dont think he could easy to be reply.... from above baby betta picture (2.5 month fish) i also reallise that color and fin form is nice, but this is head-fish so you will see body and fin is not that much balance (body big but fin too short)..... what i feel is this fish was too young to be perform in front the camera... he need more time to be jarring and diet first... too fat also in the style of some singapore betta hobbyist, they alway like to feed their lovely baby betta for wholeday of food in clear water..... and what i could know that most of the food is about "tubi worm" (easy to find)that is really alot of fat only. so many of them , the baby betta will grow up very fast (if compare with thai fish here) yes body is grow up and very thick but fin form is not much come along too ...... many time i have bring irwin fish back to thailand for the show,,,, i need to get sometime to let him diet (use fighter way)and let him flare more to make the fin longer and bigger too. that really different from our way or thailand betta keeping style, we just throw our betta flies to the tank manywhere (sometime sun sometime raining), water good but always get green on the top.... also just feed them 1 time only , we not always use tubi worm here, becoz it will always make our water get dirty if it not eat finish in 1 time, let natural take care them for us... and this is the way to make our fish more strong....(only strong fish can life here) ok joep, i got to go and pick up irwin now .... hope you get all my meaning in my poor english. hope to share some information with you again in the future |

Just came back from BKK and saw your comments. Well, I think they are fair comments and I know exactly what you meant as I've read your article on rosetail before. Anyway, as for the body shape and finnage balance.... haha... Indeed, the balance is slightly off when I took the pics of this young fella. I personally also think this fella was too fat what I took this shot. Actually I just jarred him for only 4 days (if I remember correctly) when I took this shot. He was the biggest from the spawn and also the fattest. Well, you gotta pardon me....I was damn eager to take pics of this spawn then.... I should have wait till they are about 3-3.5 months and about 2-3 weeks after I've jarred them before taking the pics. Usually after jarring, the finnage will develop further and body will slim down as well due to a change in diet (I'll switch to frozen bloodworm which is lower in fat content after jarring) and more flaring sessions. This reply comes too late. I've sold this fella away a long while back. If you see his pics when he was about 4 months old, he definitely looked much more balanced. As for the rosetail gene, you're absolutely right that he carries some rosetail gene in him. It comes from the 8 rays OHMPK male fish which I used. And I do agree with you that extreme form of rosetail should be cull. But when I say "extreme form" of rosetail, I mean those with extremely uneven body scales and caudal branching, petal-like caudal or uneven curvature in the caudal. From the body scales and caudal branching, I personally do not think this fella should be considered "extreme form" of rosetail. Although the branching of this fella is not perfectly, at least the caudal can still fan out nicely. even In addition, the curvature in the caudal is relatively smooth. Ventral is slightly short but hey... this fella is only about 2.5 months! My personal opinion about this fella is that (1) the pic was taken at a time when it was not at its prime (2) There are indeed rosetail genes but not enough for me to cull him. If I were to use this fella for breeding, all I need is just to cross it with a normal 4 rays female to reduce the rosetail gene. Anyway, I do value your comments. I'm learning new things everyday and always welcome valuable advice from experienced breeder like you and many others out there. And I do look forward to more good fish from your breeding program as well. Cheers! |

Hi Ton Interfish & Checkerbox,
Thank you for your comments. I really appreciate that you both are not angry with me after giving my honest opinion about your fish. As said before I really like the fish you show us here most of the time and I hope to see many more in the future ! Good luck with all the projects, keep up the good work! Many greetings from the Netherlands, Joep |
