Anyway the disadvantages of an internal filter is that it takes up space and maintainence can get very messy.

HOB filters should be good enough le. If you are dead serious on your tank being a planted tank and you are using CO2, cannisters are a better choice, but it is much more expensive.

Best to get the finest stainless steel wire mesh to cover up the inlet, shrimplet won't get through, won't choke up filter as long as you don't have dead leaves floating around .....

Actually I also using net the fish net extra fine ones but kindof reduce the flow rate.

I use a 27W lights for the 1.5 footer cause I use CO2 and it is heavily planted.

Why not go for more plant mass? You can use low wattage lights if you are not using CO2, but more plants will means that it will be safer (more plant mass to fight algae and is a helping factor in the nitrogen cycle), looks nicer too!

I have seen cheap lights for around and under $15, around 9W or 7W or so ba, can't remember the exact details.
