Readings between 400 and 450 reflect the use of either potassium permanganate or ozone to increase water quality by addition of a chemical oxidant to the pond to oxidize the various dissolved organic compounds and solid waste materials on the pond bottoms and in the filter systems. Readings in this range usually do not harm the useful bacteria in biofilters if the length of time is less than 30 minutes in this range.

Readings between 475 and 550 reflect active potassium permanganate levels which should kill fish parasites without harming the fish, and quickly oxidize pollutants, provided the fish exposure is only a few hours per week. Water with ORP in this range should not be circulated in biofilters since the useful bacteria may be oxidized significantly.

2 ranges here, and also note the 30 minute range within harming your filter, for shrimp tank, once the filter is screwed, the whole tank eco will collasp, death shrimps follow. I would have to agree with you, that use of chemical, potassium permangate is too much of a risk to take for shrimp tank.

so for the more adventurous, heres a short summerise of the article for u in more layman terms..

adding potassium permaganate increases the oxidative potential of your water, which is the ability to oxidise waste products and kill parasites(by oxidising them)..

but potassium permaganate is a vv strong oxidising agent, and ur bb can b killed at too high levels.. so its a delicate balance..

also note that from my understanding, inverts like shrimps lack the ability to process oxidative substances which fishes r relatively more capable.. ultimately oxidation is a harmful reaction to most organisms, thats y all de hype bout anti oxidants.. (the article is on pond and fishes, also note that due to the larger vol of pond, de concentration is easier to control den a tank..)

so yups try at ur own risk, but do share wif us if u hav sucess wif them, i will mayb try on my culls wif a small tank when i have the time(not dat soon, till my exams r over in dec), and sure i will share de results wif u bros=)

so since we r on this topic

anyone adds ktp leaves to their shrimp tanks??

pls indicate if u keeping cherries/sakuras or crs

also a little off topics, i realised some pple mix up the requirements for cherries/sakuras and crs.. esp PH..

i personally do add ktp leaves.. read somewhere it can bind to heavy metals and its tannins is good for immue system and infection.. and mentioned in another thread, its also a readily available snack for them..

btw i m keeping cherries not crs, and cherries needs alkaline range and ktp can help bring down PH a little..

I also wonder how LFS keep shrimps alive by just a piece KL. Good for immunity is interesting topic. How many shrimps in our tank are die at old age? % is definitely low. Immune system problem?
