yep, very helpful tips there...straight to the juicy part. u may like to see how fellow bros take their pics..."copy" their style a little here and there. i always take a peep at their settings if the info are available so it becomes more natural when u are in the M mode

as for the prime, its a cheap and good lens IMO, but u got to access whether u really really need it.

u can try exploring others first like P, Av, Tv. personally, when the M mode comes out horrible, i'll switch to Av and crack open the apperture. in this way u're actually shooting with the highest possible shutter speed.

I am a Canon 500D user. Read the camera manual and be familiar with the body settings and buttons function, etc. Understand what aperture and shutter speed changes can affect your photos.

If you are previously using Point and Shoot cam, then the kit 1 lens (18mm~55mm) is useful. I used it to take my red aro photos w/o flash.

As for the 50mm f1.8 prime lens (cheapest canon lens), you may find it uncomfortable at first (due to your previous PNS experience) as the focal length is fixed at 50mm, you have to move your camera to capture or frame your photos correctly.

My recommendation is to shoot the same photo target (example your aro) repeatedly while you change settings like shutter speed, aperture, iso in the manual mode. Take note of the diff photos with diff settings to understand how the changes can affect your photos outcome.

Happy shooting.

Cheers,
David

The Live View mode shooting (thru the LCD) for 500D consumes lot of battery juice. Have spare batt fully charge when you intend to shoot like in PnS.
