Hi pal it would be good if you could post some pics for us to take a closer look. The curl you are talking about is the softer tissue membrane right? If its in the initial stage, with good water management there's chance it will heal. But must be very careful not to cut the hard part neither should you wait until the hard part is curl too.

The problem is trying to cure it without op...

just for the record I tried the powerhead current method and the high aeration method for weeks but they didn't work. (The only thing I didn't try is put anti parasites cos I don't want medication to wreck the fully established bio filter) I didn't give up until the hard part start to curl, that's when I do op..

Just my opinion, if anyone wants to try to cure don't drag if no positive results..

Use to have the same problem with my 18 inches RTG. The RTG was housed in a 4 ft tank and feeds entirely on market prawn (once a day). My tank also has algae problem as it is in the balcony where there is morning sunlight. I did a major water change (about 100%, removing and topping up a few times until water is crystal clear - a bit drastic, but plse use aged water), add 5 large handful of salt, added a new large powerhead (exisiting filtration comprise an internal cannister filter with smaller capacity powerhead and Eheim external filter). Did a waterchange every 3 to 4 days (25%). Aro recovered in about slightly more than a week. Retained the new powerhead and since then till the aro died at around 3.5-year old (due to carelessness of owner), did not have curl gill problem. All boils down to water condition and sufficient air.
