At this point it's a mystery. The water I used was exactly the same as the 180 tank where four happy fish still reside with no problems whatsoever.
If you want to look at it from a superstitious point of view, I traded in my four kois (also believed to be good luck) to get the three arowana and one parrot fish. Maybe that's why the three silver died? I am certain the water was good... cycled, clean, etc. I am certain the silvers weren't fighting. I am also sure they were 100% healthy. In fact they were very active. Another funny thing was that each fish died six hours away from each other. No joke. The first died when I got to work (8-9AM). That was the time I posted here I think asking for advice. Six hours later the second died (3-4PM). I posted here again around 2PM I think because my sister called me that it was "dying". When I got home approximately six hours after the second died, the third died (9-10PM). Also when I woke up this morning my 7-year old cichlid was dead. That's four fish total for the four kois I gave away... I'm not superstitious at all. I love kois and arowanas over any species of fish not because they're good luck or anything. |

Thanks for the condolences to all and for keeping things positive. I'm very much devastated by all this.

Hello,
I just purchased 2 Silver (3") and 2 Australian (3" and 4") just 3 days ago. Housed in a 100 gallon tank that used to be for my Kois (now in outside pond). They seem to be doing fine together. Although the larger Australian chases the smaller one around a bit, it does not seem to give the Silvers any problem. I noticed the Silvers stay really close to the top while the Australians cruises just below or around in the mid level of the tank. I could be that I introduced them to their new tank at the same time so there was no time for anyone to become territorial. I've also read that they are less aggressive when there are more than a few aros in the same tank. Mutiny, It sounds to me that death of your fish may be due to stress from moving if there are no signs of fighting. Sudden changes in water temp and condition may be enough to kill the young aros. Did you do a water change after you remove the kois? Was the water in your 20g tank conditioned? I think the kois can withstand a much worst water quality. The guy I bought mine from told me to set temp to 80-86. What's your's? Other thing he strongly emphasized was to remove all charcoal from the system. |
