The candidates to watch in Singapore's general election
The three key people to watch in Singapore's parliamentary election on Friday are Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong,
opposition leaders Low Thia Khiang of the Workers' Party and Chee Soon Juan of the Singapore Democratic Party. Lee Hsien Loong: selfie-loving son of independence leader Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, 63, who has been head of government for 11 years, is the son of Singapore's independence leader Lee Kuan Yew. The British-educated former army brigadier-general rose to power with a lot of heavy baggage, having to live with the popular view that he could not have become prime minister without his pedigree. But after leading the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) -- in power for more than 50 years now -- to two election victories, he has developed a gentler brand of leadership different from the iron-fisted style of his father, whose death at 91 in March plunged the city-state into mourning. The junior Lee has embraced social media like few other national leaders, taking countless Facebook "selfies" and gamely posing for pictures with supporters at public events. Lee was sworn in as the nation's third prime minister on August 12, 2004, succeeding Goh Chok Tong, his father's former deputy. He led the PAP to a predictable landslide victory in 2006, his first as the party's leader. But in elections in 2011, the PAP lost a key electoral district and suffered its lowest ever share of the popular vote at 60 percent, despite winning 80 of 87 seats. Lee has turned Friday's election into a referendum on his record. Low Thia Khiang: the quiet party-builder Former secondary school teacher Low Thia Khiang, 59, is the leader of the Workers' Party (WP), the largest opposition party in Singapore. Known as a charismatic, astute politician, he has painstakingly built the WP into a formidable outfit whose true influence is not fully reflected in the seven seats it held in the previous parliament. Low's goal is to steadily build up the WP's presence and eventually create a two-party system. "We cannot allow Singapore to fall into a situation where our survival depends only on the PAP, or just on any one party. We must not allow the Parliament to continue with a one-party rule, knowing that it will weaken and destabilise our country in future," Low, who studied Chinese literature and has his own business, hopes the opposition will now win as many as 20 seats to act as an effective check against the ruling party's super-majority. Chee Soon Juan: the dissident making waves Chee Soon Juan, 53, heads the tiny Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). An internationally known dissident who has endured jail terms and bankruptcy, Chee is the biggest surprise of the campaign, drawing thousands to his rallies after being in the political wilderness for years. Chee was declared bankrupt and ineligible for elective office in 2006 after he failed to pay Sg$500,000 ($350,000) in damages to former premier Lee Kuan Yew and his successor Goh Chok Tong for defamation. A settlement in 2012 freed him from bankruptcy and made him eligible to stand in Friday's polls. Chee has served short jail terms for protesting publicly without a rally permit as well as contempt of court. He has been on the receiving end of unfavourable coverage in local media for years but deftly used social media this time to reach out to Singaporeans. "You can call me all sorts of names: liar, cheat, failure, psychopath. You can jail me, you can sue me, you can make me a bankrupt, you can take all my possessions away," Chee said at a rally. At a lunchtime rally in the central business district, Chee was welcomed like a celebrity and signed autographs. |
