All about Denitrator

Actually I am planning on a coil type denitrator... Did some research in the internet and they didnt even mention feeding except those sold commercially... Based on the answer of yours above, seems like coil type denitrator also need to be feed... redox equation:

I consider the carbon you fed is to supply the 12H+. But carbon is C and H+ stand for hydrogen ions. Mind to explain further of the feeding part? Do you know whats the content of your deniballs?

Wow ....redox equation!

In any denitrator, you can feed or opt out. If you feed, you can ensure ready supply of electrons and hydrogen ions to balance the redox equation ........more efficient. If no feeding, it has to depends on what is available in the tank water which is never really constant. Some carbon based compound works better than the other. Sugar and alcohols are some easily obtainable examples. The actual composition of deniball is a trade secret and it is suppose to be made from bio-degradable carbon based material. I did not send to a lab for analysis as I am not involve in it.

Carbon itself will not work. If it possible, you can just throw in GAC. It has to be a carbon compound. I prefer to use deniball because it is slow dissolving ball ....providing constant supply of food.

Quick question:

If I buy a commercial denitrator and not feed the system, purely relying on whats in the tank to feed the Anaerobic bacteria will this still lower my nitrates?

I am not too concerned with having 0 nitrates at the output i just want to reduce my nitrates and then further reduce it with water changes.

Possible. If not feeding, the output has to be really slow and watchout on incomplete denitrification.

recommended to feed the anaerobic bacteria as you'll achieved more output at nitrate 0mg/l which will bring down your nitrate level.

imagine, if output still have traces of nitrate, how many times must tank water go through denitrator and how long does it take? your nitrate build up may just overwhelm the denitrator efficiency and you could be better off without the denitrator and just conduct more frequent wc to control nitrate level.

Place the deniballs inside the denitrator that's what I do. And it's basically maintenance free. Just that occasionally I will check the output and tank water NO3 level to ensure it's functioning properly.

Will there be any other bad bacteria that comes out of the denitrator? or is that all a myth?
