Which means if I do planted in 1.5 ft, not many guppies will be there since I'll keep the majority of the males in the 422. Trying to stop their proliferation and keep their numbers at that.

And the costs that comes with the planted too... CO2 don't look cheap
hmm i do have the same dilemma before. mayb share with u might helps u a bit bro

i will start with the high tech n low tech planted first. yea CO2 not cheap but seriosuly the outcome of the planted will be quite very nice. buden u will need to top up the CO2 every few months so u might really ned to consider this factor.

but if u dont mind u can try a low tech planted with nana n java fern. will look very nice too

get some sand as base, one big bogwood, a few nana n java ferns will really make the tank look gorgeous enough.

actually a 1.5 ft is not bad oredi, for planted u won't need a lot of guppies actually. more cardinals, and some guppies n a few corydoras to do the cleaning will make the planted really nice.but o cos a 4 ft tank will let u have more options to play ard with the plants n oso more fishes.

i might consider to use e 4 ft tank using low tech plants.. but ur pleco quite headache.
