Fx5 is not a decent canister for 5ft. its just barely enough for a 422.. get 2 Fx5 for a 522. Don't forget, overfiltration is better than under filtration.. even when i use fx5 with my 422, the flow isn't really that good.. i have to use another 3000l/hr wavemaker.. and the media size for fx5 is too small for a 522..

I beg to differ bro.
For the flowrate i find is enough for my 422.
As for the media capacity, I hv to agree with you it's really kinda of little, max out at 7L.

It's a cheaper alternative to Eheim's 2260 maybe? Range around $300+ bro.. Best price I've seen is at Petmart at Serangoon North...

will update, i believe for a 5ft with just 3 x 4inch IT, 3 x 6inch bichirs & 1 x 3inch PB.. it should be more than enough.. wahahha. that's why i say i'll add more when time draws closer.

i guess flowrate & filtration rate is a different matter, will be adding a wavemaker or my current HOF to increase flow & circulation.

i prefer high flowrate.. so fx5 alone i don't see my co2 bubbles flying around the tank.. only when i on my 3000l/hr wavemaker then i see a good flow.

yes.. so got to load the best of the best medias.. i load my fx5 with biohome+ and eheim substrate pro only..

the recommanded turn over rate is 6 - 10times. so 522 at 90% full is 500l.. to get at least 6 times turn over rate u need 3000l/hr of flow.. fx5 is rated at 2300l/hr, when its packed with media, should be around 2000l/hr.. thats only 4 turn over rate.. add a wave maker to increase flowrate and will thus increase filtration rate since more poo and water will be filtered away.

actually 4x turnover is more than sufficient and i find it to be at optimum. If its too fast, your BB may not have enough cycletime to breakdown the NH4 and NO2. Adding a wavemaker is for circulation of water in the tank and to reduce deadspots in tank, dont think it helps to increase flowrate and additional filtration in that sense.
