Ah Thiam, my gf are not ranchu and I don't fancy whether they really are or not. IMHO, ranchus were meant to be viewed from the top right from the beginning. Later on more variants came out that are to be viewed from the sides. Anyway, the best way to differentiate ranchu from other breeds are best viewed from the top. I have read about this about 20 yrs ago.
Whereas Shou Xing Gong and erm, Sai Tao are best viewed from the sides.

My 2 cents is, don't bother with what breed your fish is from but as long as you like it (gf are so cute!). Then venture further only when you think you can determine the good eggs from the bad ones.

Japanese call all side view egg type fish as Lionhead. But Lionhead has big head and straight back, which is very different from side view Ranchu. Maybe instead of just calling these Japanese Ranchu wannabes "goldfish", we shd find another name for it, right? How about FREAK? Since it was a failed breed of Jap ranchus
