keeping it from fish poo is fairly easy, just increase the flow and the poo will be swept away. The difficult part is to keep it away from green spot algae. Unfortunately I can't, the only way is to siphon the sand, top layer only, dry it up and put it back. It is a monthly chore but isn't as bad as other hobbyist think. Actually weekly water change is more tasking.
