With that being said, I find the most compact media now in my sump is Eheim's Substrat Pro. They pack so well and easily that I can no longer turn on both pumps for a higher mechanical filtration turnover rate... . Good media nonetheless.

i agree substrate pro is the most compact media too! but scared too compact till trap too much debris

problem is for my HOF, i put media inside both the pre-filtered and filtered comparment.. so first to trap debris will be my shrimplet-safe sponge den my media den the filter cartridge.. Anyway i guess shrimplet-safe sponge traps most of the debris liao.

That's true. I used sponge over my filter's inlet. The fine wool in my canister only finally clogged up after about 2months, although the sponge had to be replaced 2 or 3 times. Medias were sparkling clean.
