Mantis Shrimp? Hobby or food?
Hi all,
Just some random thing to share. Not long ago i went to Batam for a 2days tour. I am sure many of you might have been here before. And i came across this seafood restaurant that keeps some exotic aquatic fishes that i didt usually see in the LFS. I came across some strange looking creature that looks like caterpillar. Later i realise that they somehow resemble the 'Mantis Shrimp' that some people in foreign country usually keeps as exotic predator aquatic pets and people in taiwan prefer eating them. I guess they are also sold here as foods to the tourism. Some articles said that they can hit a bullet-like spear onto its target (youtube always show the violence part of them), but for these shrimp i see here are quite peaceful maybe they have no choice in this small pool. Although colour is not intense as the other mantis shrimp found in net, but i guess they belongs to the same category. Just wondering whether any bros or sis here have the interest of keeping mantis shrimp at your tank ( definitely not in a community tank) ? ha.. sorry for being random. Here are the pics of the mantis shrimp: They even keep shark in the small pool: =) |

Lol, 999 golden prawn.. Hahaa. Eh dear TS, i did thought of keeping Mantis Shrimp but the thickness of the tank has to be customized. On top of that the MS that is violent needs a marine setting. Cannot keep with other fishes as it may attack and eat. Need to provide hideout.
It is definitely a fun pet to have, but but, budget not nice. |

These are very delicious creatures served in restuarants and houses in China.
When I first saw it, it looked like cockroaches to me. But after eating it with vinegar, it tasted delicious. In China, the people called it as P P Xia. You cannot use your teeth to tear the shell as its sharp points can cut your mouth. |
