Default Thinking seting up my 1st SW tank

Need some advice from all senior..

I just de-comm my FW tank, I have a 1.5x1x1 and a eheim ecco 2233 cansiter, can I setup a simple SW tank with only sand, live rocks and keep a couple of clown fish and shrimps?

I want to keep it as simple as as low cost as possible, please advice what I need to do. Thanks.

Hi.. I'm new to SW tank like u but managed to keep my system running with the minimal equipments used.

My setup :- 2ft tank with hang-on filter, garden rocks.
- 2 perculiar
- 1 clarks clown
- 1 blue velvert
- 2 yellow belly damsel
- 1 coral beauty

1) As I was migrating from FW to SW tank, I use the normal river sand as my sea bed.

2) I used back my hang-on filter for my SW Tank. Those waterfall type of filter.

3) For starters I dun use live rocks but instead i use rocks I've collected from the garden at my house.

4) I dun even used a protein skimmer as I intend to experiment with Fish only SW tank.

5) I've used a normal antichlorine which I bought for $3 for my FW tank.

As u can see my setup was a very low end system as this was initially an experiment to start a SW tank. But despite all this shortcomings, my fishes thrives well with this setup. I do regular water change monthly (1/4 of tank). Been running for abt 7 mths now. Salt salinity are kept at 1.02.

I believe u can do better...

But if u want to keep shrimps, I believe u need a protein skimmer to maintain ur water quality. Invetebrates need good water quality.

protein skimmer is a must for a marine tank bro....normal fishes you can go without chiller but if you think of keeping corals...,then you have to get a chiller.....have fun with marine bro...

bro, for marine note three important things:

Skimmer
Lightings
Chiller

These 3 are the heart of the system.

Shrimps need 27 degrees temperature.

Welcome to the marine fishkeeping hobby.

You can definitely get by with just sand & liverocks. A thermometer would be useful in monitoring water temperature. If temperature constantly exceeds 30-31deg, I would suggest using a small fan(much cheaper than a chiller but causes excessive evaporation) to keep the tank cool.

The canister should be cleaned with tank water on a regular basis to prevent detritous buildup & choking it. If this happens, the canister would end up becoming a source of nitrates.

For such a small tank, and if kept lightly stocked(No more than 2 small fishes, 2-3shrimps) you should be able to get by without a skimmer and rely on weekly water changes.

I wont go into details about the other aspects of marine fishkeeping as that'll make this posting too long & wordy. You can read them up here.
