Reef Building - Electrolysis

I'm sure this method is not new to reefers as experts have used this method successfully for years to rebuild reefs.

I'm going to try replicate this process on a hobbyist's scale.

This is the cathode steel wire mesh, the wires will be sealed later

Resistance is measured for both anode and cathode

0ohms, excellent conductivity

This is the transformer + rectifier. This will provide 12VDC at ~250mA
DIYed in 5mins. Do not try this at home!

Submerge both electrodes and let the electrolysis begin!

Bubbles start to form on the cathode the moment power is applied.

erm boss...i believe i mentioned about the process in src...and i really wonder..i believe the dkH will drop really fast and the amount of water split will be quite alot..like that everyday top up water?...adding on chlorine gas...how are u going to control all these?

but in any case i might be wrong...cant wait for the results

Where does the chlorine gas comes from? electrolysis will produce hydrogen and oxygen?

Updates.

The anode portion is turning green. Results of oxidation.

hi there barracuda,

really glad youre trying it out, as its like a new frontier for captive reefing. im thinking alk and ca will be consumed really quickly though as electrolysis causes the formation of aragonite on the electrified frame. are you running a ca reactor on this tank?
