Setting up a 2ftx1ftx2ft tank

Hi expert, just wonder is there any place to buy the salt water or how many kg of salt need to mix with water to get the right measurement for a 2ft tank? Just want to set up a simple marine fish tank to try it out. No live corals just fish and sand with some artificial corals stone. Many thanks!

First .... this pc of info is coming from a newbie

Roughly LFS sell saltwater @ about $1.50 per 10 ltr.

For salt mix, I use Red Sea salt - mix ratio is 2kg for 60 ltr ($11) - probably enough for a 2 x 1 x 1 tank

Suggest you go for live sand to speed up cycling process.

We don't usually measure the weight of the salt to add in when making our own saltwater but instead we use a refractometer/hydrometer to measure the specific gravity (SG) of the water to determine if we have added enough salt. We normally maintain the SG at 1.023-1.025 for fish. If I didn't remember wrongly, you need slightly less than 2kg of salt for a 2x1x1 after adding in sand and rocks so please don't empty the entire pack of red sea salt into the tank immediately or you might make the water too salty.

IMO, it would be better to skip the artificial coral stones as they can be overgrown with algae and look unsightly in the long run. For fish setup, you can consider using a combination of liverocks and coral sand instead. Liverocks provide decoration and they contain a host of beneficial organisms including bacteria to help with biological filtration for your aquarium.

Are you referring to PSB bacteria product by Azoo? If yes, it can be used but IMO, it isn't necessary to dose any form of bacteria if you opt to use liverocks and sand.

1) invest in a good hydrometer ....
2) if using salt mix do not take the reading after u stir the salt, let it settle down for 1-2 hrs first before taking the reading...
3) do not rush to add fish or "test fish"
4) use reliable test kit to measure your ANN before adding fish

Ok bro, many thanks! Just curious, is there a different between those normal salt ($2 per pkt 3kg) and the sea salt? Canbwe use the normal salt to mix with water or must use sea salt. Many thanks!

sea salt does have those minerals that is similar to sea so it's prefer to use sea salt or NSW
