hotshoe flashes r those that look like this ..
Slave flashes r those thats without the contact points at the bottom .. in general almost all cameras with internal flashes can activate slave flashes ... is thats the "external" term u r looking for ...

SB 800 ... is a rather highend flash with lotsa room for creativity ... but end of the day ... all factors r dependent on the photographer and his/her style .. Personally am a nature photographer .. so wireless commander offered by SB800 aint that useful for me .. but instead a Metz HammerHead with higher GN yet equiv price fits my style better esp when I'm doing tele shots of birds .. should u plan to get SB800 .. why not check out "oracle" from clubsnap.com in their Mass order section ... he's got some new sets for $580 with 1 yr local ... I've seen frens doing "portable" studio setups using triple-SB800 on tripods taking aquarium shots ... eleminating shadow overcast from single light source and better background illumination ... believe individuals using such techniques can tell u more ... should I recall ... benny (moderator of this section) practise this style of shooting as well .. In anyway this is one factor that I will consider SB800 over other flashes .. believe there should be more advantages beyond this ..

Canon G series also accepts external flashes and you can choose from Canon speedlite 220EX, 430 EX, 580 EX II, amongst others.
The sames flash can of course be used on any of the Canon SLR or Digital SLR bodies as well. Cheers, |
