Ranchu is without dorsal fin and do not have a big head like "a lion"...

Male pectoral fin more rough than female's, first ray of pectoral fin is slightly white dotted when mature... hard to tell for a young one
must feel using hands, or see using a magnify glass...

Perhaps you can go down to Sunset way LFS (Swee Seng LFS) to see the gold fishes there and ask the owner what the diff between a Lh and Ranchu. They sell a lot of gold fishes (retail + bulk)

Swee Seng LFS:

Talking

haha,......i went to another lfs near my home today and i saw among the big black ranchus in the tank there was a red/white small ranchu. It has a kind of an idiotic expression on his face that looked very cute and funny to me...LoL

And the way lionheads/ranchus open and close.....vice versa with their mouth is also veri cute to me.
