Hi,

I'm also a total newbie, may I know what kind of koi does one get for $25-$75? I'm thinking of starting out with small ones. Should I check out Nippon or Marugen?

Thanks so much in advance!

Thanks Razor,

I'd like to buy a reasonably good quality fish but not too expensive as it's my first time and not sure if I can manage the water quality, cleaning of filter method etc without them being dead in a month's time. On the other hand, I don't think I want to get $3-$10 koi found in pet shop. Actually, what are the differences between pet shop and farm kois? I only know the pet shop ones don't look good at all

I was a newbie before and once you get interested in koi you will go for $250-$750 then when you get crazy in koi you will go for $2500-$7500 which is normal.
Don't care of the prices as long as you like the fish $50.00 also worth it.

That's so funny but so very true Alan

Went to Summer Koi earlier this afternoon, they do have very beautiful selection with $80 being the cheapest (small 4-6"). But at that size, I won't be able to see them visibly once in pond. Alan, when you first started, did you start with the small ones or immediately got some big ones?

I'm also newbie in keeping koi.
But recently saw some beautiful koi less than $10.
I guess local breed has improved a lot and now also producing high quality koi.
Brought a few home and keeping them in tank.
Quite enjoying to see them swimming in the tank.

Don't go to LFS. I pick from farm instead.

Hi Golden Snake,

how long ago did you start? You must be having lots of fun! Sorry LFS means local fish shop? Where did you get yours and how old? Sorry for the many questions. After seeing those $80-$200 and $350 for 2 year olds Japanese ones, I'm quite curious to see the $10-75++ at Marugen and Nippon. If they're local bred Japanese parentage kois, then should be very pretty too I suppose
