ComforDelGro revises taxi fares
ComforDelGro revises taxi fares
By S Ramesh | Posted: 05 December 2011 1951 hrs http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...169537/1/.html SINGAPORE: Taxi fares for most commuters will go up from 6am on 12 December. Transport company ComfortDelGro said it is revising its taxi fare structure to better match supply with the growing demand for taxi services in Singapore. The changes include both increases and decreases in fares and surcharges. The other taxi companies are expected to make similar announcements as the National Taxi Association said it is already in talks with them and urged them to adjust their fares as soon as possible. Among the revisions announced by ComfortDelGro, the flag-down rate will increase between 20 cents and 70 cents depending on the model of the taxi. Currently, the cheapest flag-down fare is S$2.80. The peak city area surcharge, peak surcharge, time and distance formulas will also be adjusted. ComfortDelGro said the flag-down, distance and waiting time fares were last adjusted in December 2007. Since then, taxi drivers have had to cope with higher costs of living as a result of inflation, said ComfortDelGro. The company said the new fare structure will include reductions in the peak-hour surcharge. But there will also be an extension in the peak periods to include weekends and public holidays. The evening city area surcharge of S$3 will also be extended to Sundays and public holidays while the current S$1 public holiday surcharge will be removed. ComfortDelGro added that to encourage commuters to call for a cab, call booking charges will be reduced. The current booking fee of S$3.50 for peak periods and the S$2.50 fee for all other times will be reduced by 20 cents. Given the combined effect of increases and reductions in fares and surcharges, the new fare of an average 10km trip during the peak period is expected to remain largely unchanged, at S$12.30. ComfortDelGro believes passengers who travel by taxi during certain periods of the day will actually see a drop in total fares while others, specifically those who travel by taxi during high-demand hours, will see an increase in total fare bill. In a separate statement, the National Taxi Association said that in view of the rapidly rising operating costs, the revision is "fair and timely" to help taxi drivers defray part of cost increases. - CNA/ir |

This would only encourage taxi drivers to ply in a small area or within thier estate. Doesn't make sense to go long distance.
