Stocking corals during cycling period ?
i just setup a 2.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 ft tank.
Last week i just dumped in about 40KG of LR and has been running for 1 week++ i'm wondering if is it possible to start stocking hardy corals like mushrooms ? just tested the water para ammonia: n/a (no test kit) NO2 : <0 NO3 : < 15 ph :8.0 my thought is , mushrooms produce very low waste , and should be ok in new tank rite ? |

When you first set up the aquarium, the test kits that will be needed would be one for ammonia, nitrite and pH. You would want to make sure the pH was between 8.0 to 8.4. The ammonia should slowly go up to around 3.0 PPM and then drop back to 0.0 PPM. The nitrite will also rise to 3-5 PPM and then slowly drop back to 0.0 PPM.
Once both the ammonia and the nitrite are back to zero, we consider the tank “cycled”. To monitor your maintenance schedule, you will test for pH and nitrate. Since you're having to a mini-reef, you would want the nitrate level to be below 10 PPM and at least to maintain calcium levels are high enough (over 350 PPM) to promote the growth of the corals and coralline algae. A phosphate test kit is necessary especially if algae is a problem. So it is your call as you only mentioned nitrate level is < 15. |

Hi angmoh,
1 week plus is too short, a good 1 month will be a better time to start stocking. If i were u, i'd start with a few fishes 1st to let the system mature slowly and just a low bio load to do thing slowly. From there if everyting looked fine than i'd start some corals. |

During cycling, no stocking of any livestocks should be done. Although mushrooms are hardy, they can still fall to poor water parameters and die. Ammonia and nitrite are more toxic in marine setups due to the higher pH values.
