Oh...in that case, the koi picture i posted on top should be Sanke, since it has a distinctive sumi mark on the shoulder. ( Shoulder is somewhere just below the head for a koi , isn't it ? )

And since its sinking sumi on its head have not yet surface, so it is still a Sanke, then later on as it ages, it becomes Showa ? Correct me if i'm wrong.

Bro. Koijunior.

If I were you. I would not select a Sanke with a black mark on the head. No point taking a risk. No doubt the article claimed that it may goes off but I only believe my own eyes.

This is a Sanke, with sumi on head!

In general, sumi stripes on fin will consider Sanke, sumi patch on pectoral fin will be consider showa.

The sumi for Sanke is different from sumi from Showa.

Sanke is with smaller Spot/patch sumi.
Showa's sumi is like warpping the body. The old definition was that Showa is a Black koi with red and white pattern. (But I've not understod this definition myself)

There are also another way of identifying Showa, which is Sumi in the mouth.

But all these are blur now, with Sanke have large sumi patches and also strong sumi on head!
(Although this will get demerit point in Koi Show)

In anyway, have fun in koi keeping is more important.

Sanke or showa quite confusing. Most important you like the koi.
