symptoms of gill curling

my aro gills are breathing very smoothly but when it breathe the mouth open and close just a tiny bit. is that normal?when the gills move i see the mouth open and close too. just to add its diet and behavior are normal. and i would like to know what are the first symptoms of gill curling before the gills start to curl.

any bros care to comments?

Hi bro,

In my opinion, this is normal. Aro breathe by extracting O2 from the water. Water enter via the mouth, passes the gills, and exit from the behind the gills plate. At the gills, O2 is extracted from water into the blood stream, while CO2 is release into the water. Slight moment of mouth & gill plate is normal, but not the heavy panting type.
Good to ensure sufficient air in the water by adding an air pump.

I'm a newbie but my silver aro does the same thing. I'm not really sure about the symptoms but hear the reasons for it are bad water conditions, fluctuating temperature, and a cramped fish tank...but u'd better ask sum senior guys to make sure

my did the same symptoms before (for 1 week).............since my PH keeps going down and become acidic. Plus i reduced the water bubbles and water current on the surface...which makes things worse.

Once I stabilized the PH to 7......and added 2 airstones into my tank...my aro dont breathe heavy anymore. Mouth is slightly shut....and dont open and close anymore.

so...pls make sure...that your water parameters are ok (ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, temp, etc). If one is not good...you will see that your aro will act not-normal

i have 2 airstones in my 6ft already and my water conditions are all good. i guess it is normal for the aro to do that like bro white lotus said. since my aro is still a little bit jumpy cause its still new to the tank. sometimes i see my aro open and close its mouth very tiny and sometimes i don't see my aro doing that at all.

yeah..it breathes a lil bit heavy..when it panics...

plus as what you said..its new to the tank...

as long as water parameters are ok...he should be ok

Bro,

it sounds normal now and nothing too serious.

Anyway, the 1st sign will be panting & tired look often refusing food.
2nd sign will be (apart from 1st sign) softer edge of the gills turn outwards.
3rd sign will be the turning out of the hard gills.

To prevent this from happening : ensure good water condition, sufficient water/air circulation, constant temperature 26~28 degree C is better.

Regular weekly WC of 20~30% with treated water.

And watch what you feed. Live food will bring harmful bugs.

Do not add or experiment with too much/many water treatment chemicals.

Whatever that can cause the sensitive gill tissues to swell is a prelude to gill curl.
