I do agree with Aroboy that you should cycle your tank. Every dedicated hobbyist should do that. However personally I don't cycle my own tanks. My new tank can arrive on Mon, I wash & soak it overnight. Drain water on Tues. Top up water & run pump. At the same time place activated carbon in filter for 2 days. Thurs or Fri can put fish already.
The rational is like this. The idea of cycling a tank is to ensure that you have cultivate sufficient BB to support the waste output of your aro. However if you are cycling your tank with a few feeder fishes, you'll never be able to cultivate BB with those few fishes to support a much bigger aro that is producing lots more waste. Hence I don't even bother. The fastest way to cycle your tank is to get a piece of old, dirty filter sponge from another tank & place it in your filter. It is done with your aro already in the tank, so that your aro can produce waste to feed the BB. The BB in the old sponge would seed the new media in your tank. If you measure NH4 & nitrites, you notice that everything would be 0 in about 1 week. |
