redcross Bubbly slime coat

I forgot to plug in my heater after a water change but that didn't matter since it was warm here in New York. But one of the weeks it got really cold and I didn't realize that my heater wasn't plugged in and my aro formed all this white slim on it's coat. I changed the water, plugged the heat back in and it seemed to have gotten better. The slime fell off and it ate, though not as much as usual.

But a week after it sorta got better, things started changing. It's not eating, one of it's barbels disappeared and it has a bubbly slime all over it. I have included pictures in an e-mail account. To access the account, use this info:

You've got an excessive slime coat problem. Excessive slime production usually indicates some kind of irritation to the skin. Hence the aro is trying to protect itself by producing lots of slime.

You'll need to check you water parameters especially pH. There could also be is some kind of dissolved irritant or toxin in the water that is causing this problem. You can add activated carbon to your filter to help remove any possible irritants. Salt & epsom salts can each be added at 0.1-0.3% (1g per L of water). Do that for now & keep me updated. Cheers.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've been using activated carbon. pH is 6.0-6.2. Ammonia is at 0 ppm. I only have table salt at home. I should buy some aquarium salt right?

How longh the AC been in your tank? How often do you change the AC? Don't use tablet salt. You need to go buy aquarium salt. You should be able to get epsom salts over in the US as well.

I think the AC has been in my filter for 2-3 weeks. Is epsom salt supposed to be just as safe? The labels says it's for laxative use. I'm afraid to use it.
