HI Stradic,
THe jap yellow powder, as it is commonly known, is purported to contain a nitrofuran as its active ingredient. Nifurpurinol seems to be the likely nitrofuran used. It is a chemotherapeutic medication which acts against a wide range of bacteria, and henc it is used widely as a antibacterial medication. Cheers, Kenny |

Just to add that nifurpurinol is one of the nitrofuran group of medication. They are carcinogenic & are banned in food producing animals & fish.

Hi AroboyII,
Personally, I've not experienced any problem with BB die offs using the yellow powder, but I've never gotten around to qualify it. But being a broad spectrum antibacterial, it may act against the BB. So, after using it to treat your fish, you may want to be more deligent in your water hygiene regime, so as to allow BB to re-establish in the case of a die back. Cheers, Kenny |
