What haapened to XB
My fren bought a 12" XB from lfs yesterday. when arrived home, transferred XB to new tank (standard procedure performed). but to his horror, tail of XB broke (and it did not even knock into anything. aro was even looking ok in bag) it began floating at top of tank. He quickly lowered water level, add 2% salt and raise water temp to 32 degrees + increase black water. then within the next hour, the dorsal fin dropped. Can somebody tell me wats happened and wat should he do? Will the aro recover?
Latest update, aro swimming better now (not sbp, heng ah....) but fren very worried and sim tia. Can somebody pls help..... |

What do you mean by BROKE? You mean the tail drop or broken??? Your discription is very vague. D fin drop or close up?

This is something that's very common. It is not your tank water. It is how the aro is being transported and this is one reason why many hobbyists during transportation will either reduce the temperature of the water the aro is in or to transmore the aro. XBacks are most affected. Their tails are the weakest. When they struggle and splash, there is a good chance the tail break. There's nothing now that u can do except to keep ur water clean and wait for the tail to grow.

its just like kamikaze...like John said its very common for XB to execute this kind of "killer moves"
it will be beneficial if bullfrogs is part of the staple diet to prevent such happenings...it enhances the bone structure with the calcium content from a BF diet best not to leave the XB unattended in its bag...once they are agitated they will use their own tail as support to try to jump/struggle...hence ending up with a broken tail...worst case I saw is broke all 3 finnages... |

thx all bros for your help and advice.
Kindly look at the pics in the following link, the condition of the XB http://www.arofanatics.com/members/bubu/injuredxb/ Now will make sure that next time get XB must take note of all the pointers that you've all mentioned, thx. Aro now looks healthier according to fren but he is concerned that the finnage and tail will have distorted growth. May I ask if its true and if true, how to prevent it or help it to grow better as it used to? |

keep good water condotions and very importantly do not use power head now else the regrowth of the fins will be wavy or distorted. Keep water as calm as possible but must have air bubbles also.
