Grasping for air at the surface?

Plug on an airpump with an airstone or similar.

Meanwhile...

Have you medicated the tank or something?

There have to be something that's caused this situation. Try to recall what you've done (differently, perhaps) to the tank/Aro recently.

You should'nt have washed all the media. About 50% will do and only rinse it with the tank water.

As for now, better test the water for ammonia n nitrite. How is your pH level?

Should not put any medication at this point of time. Determine the cause of grasping and that's why testing of water is required. In the meantime, increase the salt level to 0.3% level.

I'd try to do a water-change first.

Right, at this point of time, don't medicate first. At most, just put salt.

You can use the calculator provide by AF.

I guess you nitrate means nitrite. If you have a small spare pump, install just below the surface to agitate water surface to promote more oxygen exchange. Try to prevent the pH going down. The main thing is to watch n observe closely the situation.
