Will 2 silver arowanas live well with 1 Australian arowana?
Hello everyone,
My name is Sean. I've raised arowanas before but never multiple arowanas in one tank. Last night, I bought 3 silver arowanas and 1 Australian arowana. The 3 silver ones are about 3-4" long and the Australian is 4". I've separated the silvers in a 20 gallon tank temporarily until they catch up to the size of the Australian. Meanwhile, the Australian is in a 180 gallon tank. When I woke up this morning, I found one of the silver arowanas at the bottom of the 20 gallon tank not moving. When I got to work, I received a call from home that it's still at the bottom and turning sideways. I know the chances of survival is low but I've asked my dad to place the fish in a small bucket of pre-conditioned tap water and add half a teaspoon of salt in it. If in fact that arowana is dead (*sigh*) would it be possible to have the other 2 silver arowanas mixed with the Australian once they catch up to his size? Thanks. |

Hi & welcome to arofanatics. In regards to yr question, I'm skeptical that they could live in peace, as in there would be fights sometime or rather. As you would know, Australian aro's are usually more aggresive. Maybe if you add other large tankmates, it might reduce aggresiveness and dominance?

My original plan was 3 silvers slightly bigger than the Aussie in one tank, but then one is dying (or maybe already dead). EDIT: Thanks for the welcome. Sorry, lost my manners for a bit there. Hehe. |

sorry to hear that you may loose one silver so quickly
i'm almost in the same boat. i bought a baby jardini before chrismas and wanted to buy either two silvers or one more jardini to be in the same tank. but different sources (including this forum) that the chance of success will be low. but i might change my mind in the near future about that. right now, my main concern is the growth of my jar. he stopped eating during the day when people's around, and it's still only my assumption that he's eating at night. what i mean by that is, i drop in pieces of krills before i go to bed and see that they disappear the next morning. i have other fish in there but i don't think they eat krills. good luck! and keep us informed on your aro's. |

Bro mutiny, silver will grow faster than jardini and i wish to suggest you remove out your jardini to the 20 gal tank and put your 2 silvers in the 180 gal tank first.
After 1 week, then you put back the jardini into the 180 gal tank to comm and monitor because jardini are very aggressive aro and doing this way will not let your jardini to claim territorial first to start up a fight. Good luck and hope your comm will be success and peaceful. |

After a few hours, when I noticed that the last silver acted a little weak, I moved it to a separate quarantine tank right away. It stayed at the bottom and started to tilt sideways. In the meantime, the Jardini, two parrots and the sweeper were fine in the 180. In the quarantine tank, I used the same water from the 180 and of course the same temperature. I added salt and methylene blue. It seemed to have recovered but then gradually it started to get weaker and weaker again... until finally it just stopped moving altogether. I am so upset right now. I can't believe of the six fish I bought, I am left with three --two parrots and one Jardini. None of the silvers made it. This is one of the worst moments in my years of fishkeeping as a hobby. I am just so sad right now. If for some reason this Jardini dies, I'm going to sell everything and I'll never keep a fish again for the rest of my life. This just sucks big time. |
