redcross Discus n Angel with 1 pop eye each

Hi, i adopted 2 fish (1 angel n 1 discus) from my previous flat owner. The place was empty for many months and the previous owner did not do water change for the 3 ft tank where the 2 poor fish live in. (The previous owner had been regularly going back to the empty flat to feed them every 3-4 days)

When i jus took over the last week, i realised they had pop eye infections (white-like transparent blister/ulcer over 1 of their eye). The discus' condition was more severe as the blister/ulcer was really large. The angel's blister/ulcer was not so bad...

I did a complete water change last nite, scrubbed the tank with clean sponge n added aquarium salt, but found the discus even struggling by lying at the bottom of the tank. It's not dead cos it's still gasping for air. The angelfish also occasionally lying flat at the bottom, but will get up to swim around. But the discus is like not moving cos no energy...

Help pls...!! Will the discus die?

Hi bro, did you add any water conditioner. If you did not, most likely it is due to the chlorine attacking the fishes. What you could do immediately is to get some water conditioner from the lfs and add it to a pail of water and temporarily put the fishes inside the pail. In the mean time, drain your tank and refill it. This time adding the water conditioner. After a few hours, you can return your fishes to the tank. If possible, get a heater and maintain the temperature at 28 degrees. Pls provide more info regarding the amount of salt added, size of tank and some pictures of the sick fish.

maybe i did not add enuff anti-chlorine, but i dun think that's very harmful to them rite? (I once did 100% wc (with out anti-chlorine to my guppies n tetra in a smaller tank n they were not affected at all...)

My tank is abt 3ft. I added abt 5 tea spoon aquarium salt.

Hi Shunsuke, guppies are different from discus and angel fish. I have kept guppies myself too and did not use anti-chlorine most of the time since i seldom did 100 % WC. Discus require more delicate care.

Oic... thanks for your advice. I'll do another wc with anti-chlorine tonite then. But really must wait a few hours before putting them back to the tank? I scared they cannot survive long in the pail... i think must prepare air-pump in the pail for them liao.

Put air pump into water inside pail.

Can try anti chorine + choramine like baxter 3-in-1, the effect is faster.

bro, 3 ft tank is quite big. can add more salt. i usually add two handfuls into the tank. salt will inhibit bacteria growth.
