Default PM Lee still thinking of career development

1/18/2012
Hsien Loong still thinking of career development
Hsien Loong is still thinking about promotion and career development of his employees. This kind of anomaly only exists in one country and no where else. No where in a democratically elected govt does a head of a political party has the privilege of career planning and development, and a salary scale for politicians as if they were employees of the state. In a normal healthy democracy every term of appointment could be the last term before the next general election.

Would Obama or Cameron be talking about career planning for their ministers with salary increment and promotion to come with it? What is happening here is a unique situation that could no longer exist in the next general election. It is not going to be the same anymore looking at how things are developing. Any political party that is elected to power should count themselves lucky. And to be reelected again, is not going to be a sure thing. In many countries, a two term party is a great achievement that many could only hope for.

What happens if a new govt is elected to power in 2016 and subsequently political offices change hand more regularly? It is something that can happen. To be elected again and again is no longer going to be a guarantee as the political system matures, as the people get wiser and more demanding and more selective.

After reading this comment, it also sets me thinking. Why does the PM has this mindset that he is going to rule Singapore until he retires? Have we already voted him in 2016? No other government in any country in the world bothers about the salary and career development of future politicians as every few years, whether they are voted in or they are voted out. Here in Singapore, this PM is talking as though he is the permanent PM and all his PAP top guns and future top guns will be his problem and in turn will be our problem. What happens when his party is no longer in power? Will Singapore be destroyed?

this is what makes Singapore successful, the ability to plan long term. They can exhume an important cemetry today in readiness for road use 20 years down the road. Not many countries can make that kind of forward planning.

obviously they are not planning far ahead enough. if they are then MRT will not be facing the issue of overcrowding now.

It is actually very good to have a long term government that is capable.

Long term planning can only be done when the government is stable and has the support of the people.

A country's aspiration should come from the people, not from a few individuals. therefore it does not matter if the leadership changes from ah kow to ah ter, at the end of the day, the will of the people should prevail, which is why there are elections. stability in govt? upside is the contintuity, downside is complacency. which govt in the free world can nowadays be sheltered from scrutiny of the public?
