Breeding Season 2017
My breeding for the upcoming year 2017 is being brought forward because of some travels nearer end of this year and the beginning of next year. Thus I have to start my breeding early, take a break and hopefully resume right after Chinese New Year.
I will like to share my breeding technique and hopefully can inspire more wanabee breeders to join the fray and promote ranchu breeding/keeping as an enjoyable past time. My most ideal breeding set up uses an Artica Chiller and set temperature at 20C for the fgt water and 21=22C for basin water.
If you look closely, I am using a 2 ft fgt which I put in a bigger fgt. In the 2ft fgt I put 2 red bricks and set my basin of eggs on the red bricks and chill the water in the fgt to 20C. The water in the basin is chilled through the basin wall and is about 1C different..usually about 21-22C in basin. I also have two pieces of glass as covers to maintain the cool water, but deliberately leave an opening of about 2 inches to let the air around the basin circulate so as not to foul the water and bring fungus to eggs. Eggs chilled at 21-22C hatch in 4.5 days average. The reason for putting the 2ft fgt in a bigger fgt is bcos my spawning set up is in a corner of my flat and chilling the fgt will entail much condensation especially at 20C and the bigger fgt helps contain the condensation water from dripping onto the slippery ceramic tiles...Hdb dwellers please take note!! As we cannot predict how many females will egg any given days, I do use another set up to hatch another spawn if necessary..I use an Ice Probe Chiller...a simple device which can keep my water cool between 23 to 25C.
Hatching time for Ice Probe Chiller is 2.5 to 3 days and fries are smaller and more delicate...harder to raise and thus I must be very discipline on feeding and water quality. I been doing ranchus since the early 2000's and still enjoy breeding and cultivating fries for the sole intent of hopefully breeding better quality ranchus. Please note I am not a commercial entity and I do not breed for the sole intent of selling and making money from breedings. I share and hopefully more players will come enjoy breeding and we help improve each other breeding techniques. interesting!
any reason why breed in lower than our room temperature? and when the eggs are conceived, is it also at lower temp? |

It is documented in goldfish books on breeding that the best temp for hatching Is between 20-22 deg. Hatched around 4-5 days best as fries are more uniformed and less deformities. Some serious breeders if not most breeders have resorted to using chillers to get the results. I personally have tried with normal temp and you can see vast difference as fries turns out with bend backs n tails not well spread. |

Goldfish spawns early in the morn and that time weather is cool n water temp
Is cold. I hand spawned the fishes n let the eggs n milt settled down for a while Before draining the water away and runcsing with fresh clean water. And then The eggs are placed under the cold temp. My method. Dunno abt others. So far So good. But i am still learning |

Ranchu originated from Japan and enjoy a Four Season kinda environment. Ranchu in Japan spawn right after Winter....when Spring arrived, ranchu becomes more active and start carrying eggs.
In Singapore, ranchu are more active and tend to start carrying eggs during the cooler months of the year and especially during the monsoon seasons. Ranchu breeding in a Summer year round environment is not ideal and we as hobbyists in Singapore especially with space limitation and continuous warm weather have to improvise and try simulating the breeding conditions as close to the Japanese as possible. That is the reason we try using chiller and other cooling devices to help keep the water cool so that the eggs can be carried to maturity and hatch out in as good a size and as close a size as those fries in the Motherland of Ranchu. Ranchu eggs are quite hardy and since still egg form...as long as we don't treat them with extremities, will survive and hatch(provided they are fertilized)Since ranchu eggs are not "LIVE" yet, after hatch it is best to wash them under tap water and let the chlorine in the tap water clean the eggs...ideas like this should be shared and made available so that the standard of our breeding can go up. No chiller and don't want spend money buying one ..maybe space constraint...how about spawning and storing the eggs in the vegetable compartment for 3-4 days and bring them out and slowly immerse in some chilled water and let temp equalise and eggs hatch...possible??...so many ideas and so many skills I pick up along the way...next spawn I do a vege compartment demo to show how to carry eggs to maturity, but please for the good I try to share... start complaining to authorities that I operate a farm in a tiny Hdb flat...only idiots wanna kill those who willingly come forth to share. |
